Jet Engine Fundamentals: How Modern High-Bypass Turbofans Power Commercial Flight

Jet Engine Fundamentals: How Modern High-Bypass Turbofans Power Commercial Flight
Chapter 1

The Brayton Thermodynamic Cycle

Continuous intake, compression, combustion, and expansion

Unlike reciprocating internal combustion piston engines operating on intermittent four-stroke Otto cycles, gas turbine engines operate on the continuous flow Brayton cycle. Air is continually inducted, compressed across multistage axial rotors, ignited with atomized kerosene fuel, and expanded through high-pressure turbine disks.

Turbofan Bypass RatioPropulsion Science
Bypass Ratio (BPR) = Mass flow of air bypassing core / Mass flow of air entering core. Modern engines achieve 10:1 to 12:1 BPR, generating over 80% of thrust from the cold ducted fan.
